Lexington United
Lexington United began play in the fall of 1999. As U10 team we played in the U12 recreation league at the YMCA as well as playing various friendlies with U11 classic teams.
The team competed in the James Island Recreation tournament in the U11 division losing in the final.
In the spring of 2000 the team decided to compete in the U11 Mid District classic, league qualifying for the State cup tournament. The team finished the season with a respectable record.
In 2000 - 2001, the team qualified as the third seed from the Mid District for the State Challenge Cup.
In 2001 - 2002 the team completed another step towards achieving the highest goal. The team won the Mid-District cup and finished second in the state at the highest level of competition.
In 2002 - 2003 the team continued its high level of play capturing 3 tournament championships and falling to eventual State finalist Summerville in the quarter finals of the state tourney
In 2003 - 2004 the team was a finalist in 3 of the 5 tournamnets it competed in, capturing the Mt. Pleasant Showcase, finalist in Aiken (canceled due to weather), undefeated in the Greenville challenge (not advancing due to points), finalist in St. Patrick’s Tournament and a respectable 6th place showing in The AFC Lightning Challenge against regional powerhouses. The team qualified for the state challenge tournament quarterfinals suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.
In the fall of 2004, the team has began another step in their development by the addition of Justin Rhodes as coach. Coach Rhodes brings many years of experience at high levels, including a national championship appearance.
In the fall of 2006 the helm of the team has been passed on to coach Mark Berson of the Univeristy of South Carolina. Coach Berson brings several years of experience at the highest level including coaching players who have since moved on to professional careers as well as World Cup particpation. Coach Rhodes still maintains in contact with the boys from his new location in Atlanta, Gerogia. The team has participated in every state tournament, since it has been eligible.
In the fall of 2006 the team was crowned SCYSA Challenge Cup Champion and represented Lexington and the SC at the Region III championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
In 2007 the team competed for the first time in the Region 3 Premier League East division posting a 5 -1-1 record, placing second and receiving the automatic birth to regionals. The team also competed in the SC Challenge State Cup falling 3-2 in PKs to CESA Premier in a game that Lexington clearly outplayed the champions but were unable to overcome to costly errors in the game. The emotional tying goal scored in added time to send the game into OT was scored with 5 seconds left in the game.
